Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgery
Abdominal wall reconstruction is a surgical procedure to repair defects or weaknesses in the abdominal wall, often due to hernias or previous surgeries. It aims to restore the normal anatomy and function of the abdominal wall, providing support and preventing further complications.
Our specialists take time to listen and understand your symptoms to diagnose your condition and determine a care plan, including a plan for surgery, personalized for you.
Hernias
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue protrudes through a weak area in a muscle or tissue wall. These weak spots can develop in the abdominal wall, groin or other areas of the body. Symptoms of a hernia may include swelling, bulging, tenderness or pain.
Hernias are a common problem. More than one million hernia repairs are performed annually in the United States.
Our surgeons provide care for all types of hernias, including:
- Abdominal (ventral) hernia
- Groin (inguinal) hernia
- Incisional hernia (at or near an incision site)
- Parastomal hernia (occurs at a stoma)
- Stomach (hiatal) hernia
Most hernias require surgical repair to return the tissue or organ to its proper location and close the opening in the muscle or tissue wall. Our surgeons specialize in hernia surgery – from simple repairs to more complex, using minimally invasive and advanced surgical techniques. Hernia surgery is a common and generally safe procedure, and most hernia repairs are outpatient surgeries.
Some patients have hernias that come back after previous hernia surgery or whose hernias are so large that special techniques are needed to repair them. To treat these cases, Wichita Surgical Specialists is proud to offer the specialized care and expertise of dedicated abdominal wall surgeons, including Dr. Ragnar Peterson. Dr. Peterson has been designated as an SRC Master Surgeon in Hernia Surgery. He has also been recognized as a Verified Surgeon of Quality by the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC). This program recognizes surgeons for improving the quality and value of patient care for hernia and abdominal patients.
