Neurological Surgery

Our board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Nazih Moufarrij, is specially trained in treating diseases of the nervous system, including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and carpal tunnel. Dr. Moufarrij also consults with patients suffering from back, neck and spine pain; brain tumors; and head traumas.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a chronic seizure disorder affecting people of all ages. It is defined as having two or more unprovoked seizures. Many underlying medical conditions can lead to epilepsy, which include genetic influences, prenatal brain damage, severe head trauma, congenital abnormalities, stroke, infections, and brain tumors.

The seizures are a result of complex chemical changes in nerve cells in the brain, causing excessive electoral discharges. Epilepsy seizures can also lead to other injuries or physical problems.

For many patients, seizures can be controlled through medications or dietary therapies.

Surgical Treatment for Epilepsy

For patients whose seizures cannot be effectively controlled by medication, your doctor may recommend surgery. There are several different surgical procedures available for different types of epilepsy.

Deep brain stimulation Is a surgical procedure used to treat movement disorders, including epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. An electrode device is implanted in the brain to deliver electrical impulses that block the signals that trigger seizures.

Traditional surgery for epilepsy involves removing the area of the brain that causes the seizures. For some types of epilepsy, minimally invasive surgical approaches may be an option.

Our neurosurgeon will discuss which options are possible for you so you can make an informed decision about the best treatment option for your needs.

Back and Neck Pain

Dr. Moufarrij can also help patients who suffer from chronic back and neck pain. Many patients may be surprised to learn that neurosurgeons treat more than the brain. Neurosurgeons are trained to treat the entire spine.

Most people will experience at least some form of mild neck or low back pain at some point in their lives. When that pain becomes chronic and disrupts your everyday life, and conservative methods no longer provide relief, it may be time to consult with our neurosurgeon. Other reasons to consult with a neurosurgeon include spinal trauma or diseases.

Conditions commonly linked to neck or back pain our neurosurgeon can treat:

  • Bulging or ruptured disks

  • Osteoporosis
  • Degenerative disk disease
  • Pinched nerves (cervical radiculopathy)
